Pershing Hall: A Legacy of Friendship and Family Since 1930
At Pershing Hall’s 1930 dedication, General Pershing said: “If The American Legion is a powerhouse of friendship and kindness, then this building is its greatest substation, from which will flow a steady current of understanding. And I hope that our French friends will ever feel that this building is their home as it is our home.”]
An innate sense of extended family has defined the school from the beginning as a not-for-profit educational establishment.

First ‘home’ : Pershing Hall, home of the American Legion
When the rue Pierre Charron was created in 1864, Napoleon III by Imperial Decree ceded the land to Duc Galliera. In 1878, the land at number 49 was given to the Comte and Comtesse de Paris by the Duchesse Galliera. In 1878 the land was sold to the Vicomte de Paris, and between 1879-1882 the original building and stables were constructed by the Vicomte. The building remained a private residence through WWI when it served as General Pershing’s American Expeditionary Force’s headquarters during the war.

A Recipe for Growth: The Foundations of Our School
Mrs. Jannick Jones (lady in front with dark dress), the first Headmistress who started the school alongside Monique Porter, played a crucial role in shaping its foundational philosophy. Of French origin, she taught both Maths and French while also managing to cook lunch on a gas stove. This unique multitasking often led to humorous situations, such as having to dash away mid-lesson to check on a burning roast beef or boiling noodles. As the school grew rapidly, it soon expanded its offerings to cover classes from Kindergarten to Grade 8, reflecting its commitment to providing a comprehensive education.

Villa Copernic: A New Chapter in 1968
In June 1968, the American Legion informed Monique Porter that the school would have to vacate Pershing Hall and find a new location to teach its students. Monique Porter found herself in a challenging situation: 75 students were already registered for the upcoming fall, there was no Head of School (as Mrs. Jones had returned to the United States), and no alternative premises had been secured. On August 4, 1968, the school signed a lease for the only log cabin, or Russian isba, in Paris—Villa Copernic, located in the 16th arrondissement, not far from Place Victor Hugo. The house, constructed from wood and slate by an eccentric Russian architect, was an unusual choice, but it was "that or nothing." The parents, trusting Monique Porter, stood by her side; not a single one withdrew their children.

Reviving 6 rue Beethoven: A Historic Acquisition and Renovation
In 1985, the Head, Pat Hayot, who had returned, began house-hunting again, and the school purchased the building across rue Chardin at 6 rue Beethoven. This building had once been an art school, the École des Arts Décoratifs, likely built around 1930. It appeared that no renovations had been done since that time, as the building was in poor condition, with electrical wires either dangling or nailed in place. It was hard to believe that the French Security Department had approved such conditions, especially given the issues they had raised with the school. Everything was renovated according to regulations, including re-tiling the gym roof with tiles that matched the color and shape of those in the surrounding area.
