State of Mind (March 2021)

Acrylic on Wood

125 x 125 cm

State of Mind is based on a series of my own self-portrait photographs that depict a movement which was reinforced by superimposing them and decreasing the opacity using Photoshop. It explores ideas of mental health and how it doesn’t always reflect the front we put on as seen through the masking movement. The delicate lace contrasts with the blurriness of the figure and the stark mirror-like frame. The contrast of saturated and muted colours and blurred imagery, is inspired by Gerhard Richter.

Masked (November 2020)

Acrylic on Canvas

55 x 38 cm

Masked is an acrylic painting based on two pictures taken at the beginning and end of a movement covering the face. It juxtaposes these images above one another to create an impression of movement and create the impression of the figure hiding themselves. It is inspired by Debra Lott’s semi-realistic painting techniques and simplified background as well as the composition of two versions of a figure next to one another. The focus is on these figures and their masking and hiding from reality.

Veiled (March 2020)

Charcoal on Tyvek Paper

116 x 91 cm

Veiled explores isolating oneself from reality and others as an escapist coping mechanism. It’s inspired by my own experience isolating myself from my family during my depression and feeling isolated after an international move. The drawing is based on a photograph I took with someone wearing a translucent fabric veil, this representing a self-imposed barrier from reality. This imagery was partially inspired by Rene Magritte’s The Lovers and uses building charcoal layers to create this effect.

Fragmented (October 2020)

Acrylic on Canvas

80 x 150 cm

Fragmented is a deconstruction of the motion of falling to portray a disconnect from a sense of identity. Using Procreate, I combined 5 of my own photographs in various stages of a movement to represent having a fragmented sense of identity and isolation from one’s sense of self through the overlaying of the fragments on one another. The transparency created by the building layers of paint is evocative of some of Gerhard Richter’s work illustrates the feeling of losing a concrete sense of self.

Tunnel Vision (December 2019)

Acrylic on Canvas

Diameter 30 cm

Tunnel Vision is an acrylic painting based on my own photograph taken on a bridge in Paris. Inspired by the quiet and lonely mood of certain Edgar Degas pieces like The Absinthe Drinker, Tunnel Vision is a look into the human mind and experience, mainly feelings of being overwhelmed and alone seen in the vivid purple bars surrounding the lone figure. The painting style, mainly the brushstrokes, are inspired by Impressionist styles of representing reality, flowy and interpretive.

Wear and Tear (September 2019)

Charcoal and Chalk on Paper

46 x 64 cm

Wear and Tear is based on my own photograph I took in the streets of Paris. The drawing is a low viewpoint of a set of old stairs, demonstrating the wear and tear of decades of traffic. It explores the connection between humans and the environment they live in, on how humans influence their surroundings hence the focus on the worn steps. As with Edward Hopper’s Stairway at 48 Rue de Lille, the piece is an exercise in depiction of space and tones and exploration of urban loneliness.

Life Drawing (November 2019)

Chalk on Black Paper

42 x 59 cm

Life Drawing was done to further my technical skills and understanding of the human body as part of a life drawing class. Drawn directly from the model, this piece was made using chalk on black paper by adding in the highlights. Using simplified tones like Aristide Maillol, this study furthers my understanding of the human figures and how it can be used to create a solitary mood.

Hands (March 2021)

Charcoal on Tyvek Paper

116 x 91 cm

Hands is a manifestation of anxiety and feeling overwhelmed. The design was created by layering a series of my own photographs in Photoshop. It is the conceptual prelude to Veiled, depicting the build up of feelings, represented through the many hands, that lead to the self isolation depicted in Veiled. Inspired by Ernest-Pignon Ernest charcoal portraits, Hands employs high tonal contrast to create deep shadows that foil the subtler tones depicted via the blurred poses.

Escape (May 2020)

Mixed Media Collage on Paper

12 x 10 cm

Escape is a mixed media collage created from magazine clippings based on a selection from a still life drawing of an old leather-bound journal to represent the use of the old and fantastical ideals as an escape from reality. Inspired by Gabi Trinkaus’ use of magazine paper to create tone, Escape combines various photographs to create a whole new image. This abstraction serves to explore the idea of using imagination as a coping mechanism to the point of reality’s distortion.
