Mitivaï
My body of work explores the themes of nature and mythology and the relationship between humans and the will to explore, celebrating the beauty of our natural world. My exhibition is divided into two sections of work. The first section derives from the forest, showcasing works that capture the beauty of landscapes and flowers. The second section derives from fiction, and the mystical side of nature a compilation of works in which includes ocean themed pieces, winter pieces, and mythical creature centred pieces.
Throughout all my works I was heavily inspired by many artists such as Guy Harvey for his use of extraordinarily bright vibrant colours, Philip Treacy for his application of jellyfish structure, and most importantly Georgia O’Keefe with her extraordinary unique depictures of flowers. All of these artists conveyed their perception of nature's beauty as I wished to implement into my work. I chose the theme of nature and mythical creatures through the development of Mesmerising Soul. This piece launched the development of many of my other pieces such as Marine Pearl and Moonlight. I then developed into the forest side of my exhibition starting with Glimpse Into the Unknown, which similarly to Mesmerising Soul, launched my forestry pieces of flowers and dragon fruits.
Throughout my work I researched different compositions such as 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional works. I enjoyed mixing both, using paint as the base for my piece and adding mixed media to create a depth within the painting. The use of mixed media such as stipped paint, wire, paper mache… helps to create realism and texture to my work. I chose to use vibrant colours to emphasise the mystical side to my nature pieces, however, developing through the work I also chose to focus on the delicacy of nature, defining its beauty without colour, juxtaposing the rest of my vibrantly coloured pieces. The use of dark and light tones and blue gradients to help convey the presentation of depth. In my mixed media pieces the composition, colour, and media used, played an important part in the intended outcome. The use of string and wire for dimension, and the scale to create involvement and space. Some of my pieces with no colour such as Marine Pearl and the Nature’s Deepest Secrets series needed extra detail in order to convey the depth and keep the beauty and life of the pieces through shading and highlighting.
I exhibited my work through a rectangular shaped room with a shop window on one wall to access an outside audience. I chose to set my pieces in order to have the audience's eye directed towards certain areas. Blossom & Blizzard was placed at the front of the room so that it could be seen from the streets as well as acting as a welcoming piece to the rest of my exhibition. With the vibrantly attractive greens and its large scale I chose to place Glimpse Into the Unknown at the furthest wall so that when the audience enters it is the first piece they see. From this piece I placed the others accordingly to move from forest to fiction whilst going towards Blossom & Blizzard. I chose to place my two bluest paintings Moonlight and Mesmerising Soul opposite of each other to create a sense of closure for when the audience steps past them to the forest side of my exhibition with the tree sculpture as a door as well.
Finally my exhibition offers my interpretation of the theme wishing to provoke imagination. The works in this exhibition explore the themes of nature and mythology. Including a wide variety of media, each work was selected to embody the essence of the theme as well as engage the viewer in an immersion of a mythical natural world. As the audience makes their way around my exhibition, the beauty of forests, with their vibrant greenery and mystical creatures that call it home, the paintings and mixed media pieces that showcase the power of the ocean, with its vastness and the mysterious creatures that lurk beneath its surface. I hope that the audience feels a sense of serenity, and that through these pieces, imagination and creativity arise, admiring the beauty of the details in our natural world.
Dragons Riddle (November 2022)
Ceramic, oxides and glaze
40 cm x 18 cm
Dragons Riddle is designed to spark individual imagination. Through the open neck and scaled form the opening is made for the viewer to finish the piece creating a never ending morphing sculpture. While creating this design the artist which most influenced me was Ofen Hu through his calligraphy art. The detailed scales placed in an overlapping composition influenced by existing animals such as the Bearded Dragon and the Cobra, created my attention to focus on the details and tones of each scale.
