Maxime

My exhibition aims to explore the idea of space and surrealism. It is separated into two parts, first ones depicting geometrical work with 3-dimensional objects, large spaces and abstract position of scenery. The second part of my exhibition is centered around surrealist work that shows Bosch inspired figures and use of my own hair to represent designs and ideas. The broad range of mediums I was able to experience working on allowed a certain diversity across the exhibition body. Whatsmore, I was able to represent different artistic movements such as cubism, surrealism and abstract modernism whilst using many styles of art like modeling and photography.

As a great source of inspiration, I have used some of Bosch’s work in creating the strange figures present in my piece “surrealist madness”. Another artist that inspired me in my three-dimensional software piece was David Umemoto, a sculptor that worked with geometric figures. The third was Ernest Pignon Ernest with his pieces relating to trees and sculptures. All three of the artists allowed me to put together the combination of pieces present in my exhibition.

In the gallery, the area where my work is physically displayed can be approached by the viewer from two different angles. Accordingly, I decided to put up my two main pieces on each side of the space so as to attract attention. On either wall, I have used color combinations that put forward my work even more. The first wall has two chalk drawings and one large scale color painting which stands out due to the difference in hues. The second wall holds a black and white three dimensional model which I decided to place near my hair designs to create a nuance of colors. The diagonal orientation of the main wall of my exhibition allows the viewer to enter a type of corridor surrounded by my pieces.

Through the use of space, surrealism, geometric figures, my work is designed to make the viewer reflect on the many possibilities that are available through art. The range of work’s purpose is to evoke specific feelings such as fear, confusion and satisfaction.

Alfred

Chalk

65 x 50 cm

Initially, this piece began with a photo that I took of Alfred, as the name suggests. This photo was somewhat abstract in terms of character positioning and foreshortening. In the image Alfred was laying on two branches of a tree in a way that made it look like he was standing upright. This photograph later turned into a chalk piece that exemplifies the overall subjectivity of the work.

surrealist madness

chalk

84 x 59 cm

In this piece, inspired by the works of Bosch, I decided to explore surrealism and elements that provoke a feeling of discomfort, edging on to fear in the eyes of the viewer. This unusual scene depicting a group of odd creatures is designed to make the viewer reflect on what is shown.

Heads

Digital, paint of hair

45 x 31 cm

For this piece, I decided to explore designing specific haircuts and develop them on my own hair using special permanent dye. For every model, the hair was bleached into a white colour. The patterns were then laid on using techniques specific to each design. Hair as a medium was very unusual and difficult to paint over, therefore, the constraints had to be taken into account during the creation of the pattern. I was inspired by surrealist ideas and a friend’s hair art.

dimensional exploration

Digital software

36 x 32 cm

In this exploration of space and geometry, using software, I have designed an odd looking object that appears beyond real. I was able to use different kinds of space in order to study the chosen object in depth. This piece was done to create a sensation of satisfaction in the eyes of the viewer due to the symmetry and geometric aspects. I was inspired by David Umemoto with his architectural sculptures.

The Window Gallery

Acrylic on canvas

109 x 130 cm

This piece presents an odd view and perspective that is designed to surprise and shock the viewer by plunging him into a state of confusion. It shows a long, endless looking hallway that can be interpreted in a number of ways. It was made using one point perspective method in order for the piece to look somewhat realistic however keeping some abstract characteristics. My source of inspiration for this piece was the Portuguese artist Maria Vieira Da Silva for her work with abstract geometry.
