Hospital Hallway (October 2020)

Acrylic paint and marker on canvas

100 cm x 138 cm

Hospital Hallway shows that hospitals aren’t places that we should relate to negative feelings as the doctors that work there save lives. I decided to make the piece mostly pink as it is the representative colour of breast cancer. I was heavily inspired by Patrick Caulfield with his use of flat colours and black lines that made his pictures look more like a graphic image rather than a realistic painting.

Snake (December 2020)

Drypoint etching

30 cm x 42 cm

Snake is a drypoint etching that represents death. In this piece, I was very inspired by different symbols that represent passing away, reincarnation, heaven, different religions and cultures so I wanted to include those aspects. My piece creates sort of a contrast between the sadness of death and the beauty of those symbols. The idea of symbolism in this piece was inspired by Grayson Perry’s work and his use of symbolism.

Flower (November 2020)

Ceramics

24 cm x 18 cm x 10 cm

Flower was influenced by the work of Hector Guimard as I was very inspired by his use of nature mixed with cities. This sculpture was based on a petal of a flower that has a very delicate structure which is why I used ceramics. The cut out shapes represent windows and doors of the building, which in a way mixes cities and nature together just like in Guimard’s work. My piece also shows the fragility of beauty of a flower that links to the idea of a person diagnosed with cancer.

Cells (November 2020)

Acrylic paint and marker on wood

122 cm diameter

With my piece I wanted to show a more scientific side of cancer, which is why I chose a tondo format to represent a tumour. The background is a representation of the blurry background of a mammogram and the simple line drawing symbolizes cancer cells. I wanted to create a large piece to illustrate how many women are diagnosed with cancer every year and that it is an issue that touches a lot of people. The piece was inspired by the abstract work of Beverly Barkat and Yayoi Kusama.

Female Lines (February 2021)

Acrylic paint on canvas

24 cm x 30cm (each canvas)

Female Lines was inspired by Henri Matisses’s work, the use of two dimensional colours, abstract pieces and more specifically the very simplistic line drawing of women. I wanted to represent the changes of a female body in relation to cancer and spread a message that all women are beautiful. I decided to create three paintings that together made a sequence and form a more interesting art piece.

Survivor (May 2020)

Painting and collage

70 cm x 100 cm

With this piece I wanted to represent the feelings and the emotions someone with breast cancer goes through. With the choice of blue I tried to represent a sense of sadness and with the cut out right breast I wanted to show the sense of loss. However I also added the word “survivor” in big letters to show the strength of someone that had to go through such a thing in their life. My piece was inspired by the work of Prune Nourry and her sculpture that was based on breast cancer.
