Bloom with Your Might (November 2019)

Bloom with Your Might was inspired by Emil Nolde’s painting. The design was based on photographs of real flowers that I took in Paris. The atmosphere of the painting is reminiscent of Georgia O’Keeffe’s Jimson Weed which used more realistic colors but floral motifs in simple compositions. The painting is painted in the tondo format. I used two kinds of techniques by using the feather and a cotton swab to distinguish the different techniques.
Mémoire (October 2020)

Mémoire is based on a photograph I took of a pink flower. It was inspired by David Hockney’s patchwork of fields in the landscape painting The Garrowby Hill. The petals are transformed into mountains and the leaves fields. Each is a different place I remember visiting. The big canvas allowed me to show my feelings through the marks and colors of these places, such as a lavender field. The techniques using thin washes and pale colors created a semi-realistic image and an atmosphere of memories.
Floral explosion (June 2020)

Floral Explosion was inspired by the Dutch pouring technique of applying acrylic paint. The green, blue and white colors show the essence of the flowers, and the design was based on my inner emotion and response to nature. The purpose of this work is to explore and experiment with a new technique. The atmosphere of the painting is reminiscent of Jackson Pollock’s work and his use of dripping paint.
Single G. Lily (March 2021)

Single G. Lily is a ceramic sculpture based on the form of a flower. I was inspired by Georgia O'Keeffe Single Lily With Red painting. Upon seeing the painting, I had the intention of making it three-dimensional and I then simplified the forms. By making the piece, cross-shaped, allow me to show the flower multidimensionally. In her painting, green and white are prominent so I have also used these colors in my piece.
Black Rosharon (March 2021)

Black Rosharon is based on Korea’s national flower, Rose of Sharon. It was inspired by Japanese floral prints. The Korean national flower is in black where I got inspired by the black rose. The paper I used is the Korean art news to show the country of Korea. The pink and blue background allowed me to represent the color of Korea and give contrast by using achromatic color for the flower. Also, the traditional Korean door pattern added more Korean feelings.
Seasonal (March 2021)

Seasonal was inspired by traditional Japanese printmaking. The four orange, yellow and green prints show the different seasons, and the design was based on a combination of drawings from my own photographs of real flowers and images of floral tattoos. Some of the flowers are also inspired by Japanese-style shopping bags. The atmosphere of the print is reminiscent of James Jean’s work who uses more psychedelic colors but floral motifs in complex compositions.
Rose of Sharon at night (February 2021)

Rose of Sharon is based on Korea’s national flower which is pink. It was inspired by Japanese and Korean floral prints and paintings. The petals are grouped and present a Korean peninsula shape. The black background and the different flower colors contrast with each other. The long format allowed me to show my home country, Korea, through the traditional door pattern and colors. The techniques used a stencil, and the use of pale colors created the atmosphere of Korea.
Off-Flower (September 2019)

Off-Flower is a tonal drawing, based on one of my photos taken in front of a store. I was interested in the different flower shapes and variety of street flowers. The first impression of this flower was that it was very fragile and out of place in the city. I was inspired by Korean artist Sung Yoon Kim who usually creates tonal drawings based on flowers.
Standard of beauty (March 2021)

Standard of Beauty is a mobile comparing Korean and France standards of beauty. In the faces, there is a black and white collage of each country’s preferred style of person. This shows how two countries have different preferences and how people follow the set standards. Plastic surgery in Korea is a societal expectation whereas, in France, natural beauty is the norm. I was inspired by Calder for the mobile and also his use of wire for the heads and flowers.
