English Language Learning
- We can welcome students who are beginners in English through Grade 9. They are supported by our English as an Additional Language (EAL) Teams as they develop and build their language skills. For more information about our EAL departments and how they support learners on their English journey, please visit the EAL section of the website.
- Students applying to Grade 10 should have an intermediate level of English, or higher, in order to best access the curriculum. Please contact the Admissions Team to discuss applications to Grade 10 for students with a lower English level.
- Students in Grade 11 and 12 at ISP study the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme; a challenging and enriching curriculum that requires an advanced level of academic English. It is our recommendation that applicants to Grade 11 and 12 demonstrate a B2 English level or higher in order to access the IBDP confidently. Non-native English speaking applicants, or those who have not attended an international English speaking school, must provide documented evidence of B1 English level, with at least B1 achievement for all test sections (speaking, reading, writing and listening) as part of their application in order to be considered. We recommend international English assessments such as Cambridge B2 First for Schools, TOEFL, IELTS etc.

French Language Learning
At ISP providing opportunities to explore the French language and culture, for native speakers or beginners, is important. French is a mandatory subject from Nursery through Grade 10 and is available as an option as part of the IB Diploma Programme (Grades 11 and 12). Primary school students have approximately 4 hours of French per week and middle school students have between 3 and 6 hours per week, depending on their language choices.

Other Language Learning
Many of our students speak additional languages at home and we are committed to supporting and celebrating these, as well as providing the opportunity to learn more! At the primary school, we can help support mother tongue learning through our extended curriculum activities (ECA) programme, which takes place after school and through external partnerships. As of Grade 6, students have the possibility to take a mother tongue language as one of their language options, or choose Spanish or Mandarin as an acquisition language. Students also have a third option - extra French lessons!
Grade Placement
At ISP we operate a September 1st cut-off for grade placement. The cut-off date is applied across our three campuses and it is strictly upheld for students entering our Early Years classes - Nursery, Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten. We believe that children in early childhood education best develop socially, emotionally and academically by remaining within their age group. For older students, exceptions to grade placement can occur if the Admissions Committee believes it beneficial to the child. Only a complete review of the application file, along with the grade placement request, will result in an exception.
