Learning Support and School Counseling
Welcome to the Learning Support and School Counseling Department!
One of the learning objectives at the International School of Paris is to « ensure that both the faculty and the curriculum take into account individual learning styles, needs and levels of ability of the diverse student body in both instruction and assessment ». We follow the teaching philosophy and practice of the IB through the PYP, MYP and IB Diploma Programmes.

Goals and Objectives
- Both in Primary and Secondary, students are either supported in class, or given additional small group or one-on-one learning support by the Learning Specialists.
Within that framework, we aim to respond to the needs of students presenting: learning disabilities; social and behavioral difficulties; and adjustment, emotional and psychological disorders. We aim to provide an environment that allows students to develop and progress to the best of their potential in an inclusive environment.
ISP follows an inclusion model through differentiation. Teachers are expected to differentiate their lessons, and be open to different kinds of learning styles: This enables students to access the curriculum in a way which is adapted to their needs.
During the admission process, please contact the Admissions Office for questions relating to Special Educational Needs. |

Learning Support Protocol
Students at ISP can be referred to the Learning Support Department by their parents, their previous school, or by their current teachers. The need for support of an identified student will usually imply the following procedure:
Parents are kept informed of the process and eventual support;
Observation by Learning Specialists and / or the Head of Learning Support;
Review previous assessments, psychological reports, school reports;
Grade Head / Teacher / Student / Parents input;
General evaluation by the Learning Support Department and pedagogical team;
Recommendation for counseling;
Recommendation for, and eventual implementation of, a clinical, psychological, emotional, and educational evaluation by an external specialist;
Design and implementation of a Learning Support Plan and/or an Individualized Education Plan for particular situations;
| If a greater level of assistance than available at International School of Paris is required, referrals to external agencies will be proposed to parents. These could be, for example, Speech Pathologists, Physiotherapists, Special Education Instructors and Learning Assistants, Psychologists or Educational Psychologists. The School can advise parents as to how to find external English-speaking and French-speaking specialists in Special Education. |

Social and Behavioral Difficulties
Social integration and an appropriate behavioral attitude are essential components to success and fulfillment at school. For most students, this involves a healthy working relationship between teacher and students. Teachers at ISP are expected to take the time to foster relationships with both students and their families, to ensure continuity of care and adequate educational development in our students.
For some students, social and behavioral difficulties are directly related to their learning disabilities. In some cases, the learning specialists may address these issues with students, such as developing more appropriate social skills. This can occasionally be done in cooperation with the School Counselor.
