IB Diploma Programme
Organized by the International Baccalaureate Office based in Geneva, Switzerland, the International Baccalaureate (IB) is a very rigorous academic program emphasizing academic achievement, critical thinking, research skills and community service. It has been operating world-wide for almost 30 years and is in place in almost 1500 schools in around 120 countries around the world.
The IB Diploma is recognized in virtually every country in the world.
The great majority of 11th and 12th grade students at the International School of Paris are working toward this diploma. The IB is needed for entry to universities in a number of countries but other countries are more interested in the scores achieved by the students in Higher Level subjects. High IB scores result in advanced placement at American universities.
The Diploma Programme prepares students for university and encourages them to:
- ask challenging questions,
- learn how to learn,
- develop a strong sense of their own identity and culture
- develop the ability to communicate with and understand people from other countries and cultures.
Students following the Diploma Programme at ISP have to study 6 subjects, one from each IB group:
- Language A (literature),
- Language B (second language),
- Individuals and Societies,
- Experimental Sciences,
- Mathematics,
- Arts and the Electives
In addition they must take a Theory of Knowledge course, write an Extended Essay and complete a Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) Program.

Each of the six group subjects subjects is assessed both internally - with external moderation - and externally by examiners around the world.
