Beginning in September, students from grades 6-10 will all
have the option to take a third language class. This change was inspired
by the
latest research on bi-lingual or multi-linguage student learning.
Students who
continue to study their mother-tongue while learning in another language
have
stronger cognitive capacities and overall results. ISP would like to
support
students who would appreciate continuing to learn and celebrate their
mother
tongues by offering time within the curriculum for this to occur. Tutors
are
arranged by request by the Externally Taught Languages Coordinator,
while the
costs are funded by the families. Many families have also expressed the
need
for more French in the curriculum, so students can also choose to take a
second
French class or a Media and Culture class.
ISP will be offering the following new language classes:
Initiation au français (Initiation to French) is a
course for
beginner and intermediate speakers of French in grades 6-10 designed to
encourage spontaneous learning and use of the French-language as well as
reinforce a student’s motivation to learn French.
For native or advanced French speakers in grades 6-10, Cultures
et sociétés françaises (French culture and society), will be
offered.
This class is designed to celebrate ISP’s host country’s culture by
taking
advantage of all the richness Paris
and its region has to offer. French art and painting will be used as a
means to
analyze French lifestyles from different time periods, and field trips
will
illustrate and build upon classroom learning.
Media and Culture
is a brand-new writing course designed for native, or near-native,
English
speakers in grades 8-10 that involves a close study of the media as a
means of
mass communication and its impact on different types of audiences.
Possible topics include bias, censorship, and representation. Texts will
be
drawn from a wide range of media including: film, advertising,
journalism,
radio and television.
Spanish (language A or B) is offered throughout the MYP,
grades 6 – 10. Students may opt for a beginners, intermediate or
advanced
(mother-tongue) class.
Japanese A is a mother-tongue program designed to support
our many Japanese families.
Korean A is a mother-tongue program designed to support
our many Korean families.
Hindi A will be available should there be sufficient
demand for the school to open a class.
Chinese B is offered
at beginners level.
