ISP's Weekly Newsletter for Parents, Students and Staff

In This Issue:

Message from Audrey Peverelli, Head of School

Dear ISP Community,

What a week this has been!  I am so very proud of our students and the learning they have demonstrated so ably at both the MYP Personal Project presentation night, and the Grade 12 Vernissage held in an art gallery at Place des Vosges in the Marais.

Both events were extremely well-attended by parents and staff and demonstrated the incredible ingenuity, creativity, talent and intelligence of our students. And, of course, it was the teaching staff who helped them get there, so my thanks go to Stacy Chandler, Jonathan James, Lianna Wittenberg and Helen Wenham (the MYP team) for such a stimulating Grade 10 Personal Project evening, and to the art teachers Emma Cooch, James Chedburn, Matleena Hanninen and Brian McCrosson for supporting and guiding the students up to the Vernissage; to Philip Anderson for playing music; and to Marie Lechantre, Deborah Gregory, Francois Gentil, Rachna Sharma and Jenny Letard as well as the Building Maintenance team for their behind-the-scenes work.

At the Primary School, we began the week with a workshop about French in the PYP which was also very well attended and hopefully helped all understand language delivery in the PYP. Many thanks to Sean Walker and the French team for that. Today, we are also welcoming back home a group of exhausted, yet happy Grade 4 students who spent the week in Normandy. Thanks to John Hatch and his team for leading the students in a week of adventure and fun.

Next week is the Grade 6-8 play, Arabian Nights.  I encourage you all to attend this theater performance, which promises to be very special this year.  Many thanks go to our volunteer parent, Shauna Salomon, for her direction of this production assisted by Becky Fox, Matleena Hanninen, Lianna Wittenberg and a team of able parents. Sadly, the Salomon’s are leaving Paris at the end of this year, so this will be Shauna’s “last time” directing/supporting ISP productions, and we will be very sad to lose her professional input, so I hope many of you will attend!

Enjoy this three-day weekend!

Earth Day on Friday, April 22

Earth Day will be held on Friday, April 22 while we are all on April vacation. We hope that many of you will celebrate Earth Day and take a moment to reflect upon ways we can work together to preserve the earth’s natural resources.

Even if Earth Day is held just once a year, we can still take daily steps to reduce our impact on our limited natural resources. For more information, please visit: http://www.earthday.org/

Primary School Conundrums

Back by popular demand, we will continue to publish the weekly Conundrums for our ISP community to mull over… Please note that Googling for answers does not contribute to the brain growth that we are aiming for! Have a think, have a guess, grow some dendrites, fire some synapses and create new connections in your grey matter!

Do feel free to give your child hints and clues if they are stuck, but do not give them the answer, no matter how nicely they ask…

New Conundrums: A focus on MATH!

  • Kinder-Grade 1
How many times can you subtract 10 from 100?
  • Grade 2/3
Divide 50 by half and add 20
  • Grade 4/5
How many seconds are there in a year?

Answers from Previous Conundrums: Note there are many possible answers - these are just some!

  • Kinder-Grade 1:
What can honk without a horn?
    A GOOSE!!
  • Grade 2/3:
Can you name three consecutive days without using Monday, Wednesday or Friday?|
Yesterday, today and tomorrow OR LUNDI, MARDI, MERCERDI!

  • Grade 4/5:
Two mothers and two daughters went out for lunch, everyone ate a burger, yet only three burgers were eaten in all. How is this possible?
One mother had her mother and her daughter with her and so: two mothers (mom and grand mom) and two daughters (daughter and mom)= 3 people!
